Question:
Los Angles or New York?

I was given two options to travel during the Holidays.. I am in a dilemma in choosing between both cities ( Los Angles and New York).. I hope you guys can tell me where should I go and why ? What are the attractions in both cities ? And the weather and temperature (degree Celsius) in both cities.

Please do not tell me to travel both cities at one time because the air ticket from New York to Los Angles is absolutely unreasonable. I rather go to one city first and go the other next time than go to both city at one time. Please do not give me a one answer answer. (e.g. New York/Los Angles)

I will be posting this in both the New York and Los Angles Section.
So please do not be bias. And hope you all (especially those staying in America) can help me in this dilemma and help solve my problem ..

Looking forward to my visit in America
And thanks to all those who spent their precious time answering my answer..

Once again, thanks in advance..

If I had that choice, I'd definitely choose New York. The weather would be the only "minus", because it will be cold and probably snowy [although the city itself doesn't usually accumulate all that much snow]. Both places will be expensive to stay in, especially for the holiday weeks.

There's so much to see and do in NYC. I wasn't at all impressed with L.A. It's so spread out, you'd definitely need to rent a car or spend a lot to get around. In NYC, the subway/bus system is very easy to use, safe [except maybe during the "wee hours"] and inexpensive.

For weather info, go to weather.com or the Weather Channel website. Or that info is also in travel guidebooks, such as Frommer's or Fodor's [check out their on-line guides - lots of great info].

For hotels, you might want to check out TripAdvisor.com. Or, if you want to get a condo/apt, check out HomeAway.com.

Whichever you choose, have a great visit!

If I had to choose I would say New York. It seems so alive during the holidays with all of the Christmas decorations, etc. Plus in New York you will not need a car and Los Angeles traffic is horrid on a good day.

Both have things to do and Los Angeles has great weather, but if I could only pick one I would vote for New York. Los Angeles isn't much different during the holidays as it is every other time of the year so I would save it for later.

I have lived in Southern California all my life and I love it. It is especially beautiful in the winter. Los Angeles is a great city with a lot to do, very multicultural, with plenty of music, great food and other entertainment.

It is also possible to see Los Angeles without spending all of your time in a car. LA has a subway that will take you from downtown to Hollywood, with many wonderful things to see and do along the way.

But having said all that, if I were visiting the US for the first time, I would go to New York. It is one of the greatest cities of the world and there is nothing like it. Nothing. Go to New York. Even if it is freezing, snowing, blowing and miserable. Go to New York.

The main reason you go to LA is the weather. Both cities have plenty to do. It's just a matter of weather. LA can be warm and sunny, and NY tends to be cold and snowy.

Average highs and lows for Nov and Dec are below, with Celsius in parentheses.

Temp: High/ Low

Nov: 73 (22)/ 53 (11)

Dec: 68 (20)/ 50 (10)

I have lived in both cities and I love both although they are very different. Don't go by the opinions of people who did not see the real LA and find it to have less culture, shallow people etc...They came with preconceptions, saw the basic tourist trap areas and had their stereotypes fulfilled. They didn't see LA at all. Many people who speak so loudly about "hollywood" and the "lack of depth of LA" have never even been there. Maybe they went to a theme park at best.

There is great culture and history in LA. LA has as much of a literary legacy in the US as NY. LA has also recently (according to the NY Times) jumped ahead of NY as an arts capitol.NY is easier to see more of as a tourist as it is relatively compact and the territory has been gone over so much. LA is more unknown to tourists.

Flip a coin - both are excellent multicultural cities. I generally miss one while I am spending time in the other :) I do recommend the NFT (Not for Tourists) guides in addition to a regular tourist city guide for boh cities - but especially for LA. LA is spread out and much of the interesting bits are known by locals only - completely missed by tourists. Thee is a lt more o LA than he entertainment business and good weather. By the way in Nov-December it will be approximately in the 70s (20 C) degrees F in LA, 50 degrees F (10C) in NY, maybe colder.

I would never want to live there but as far as what would be a better city to visit, I would have to say New York City. More to see and do and you don't really need a car.

NYC, transportation is so much easier

and its so beautiful there during the holidays, I would love to be in Manhattan for Christmas, especially if it snows a bit :)

You don't really get a "white christmas" here in LA

I live in LA and I can tell you that during the Holidays, NYC is the place to be...hands down! It is much more festive and beautiful than LA and the decorations on 5th Ave. are stunning.

LA really isn't the place to go during holidays. The traffic is horrible on a regular day and it's going to be a LIVING NIGHTMARE!!! during the holidays.

I would go to NYC if I were you.

NYC by far.....once you land you never have to step foot in a car again, you can get by with taxis and subways--everything is right out your door.....no matter what your interests are there is way more going in nyc than in LA....i think LA is lame
