I think I'm moving to LA this summer with my kindergartener. Any advice re neighborhoods (renting) and schools (public)? I am kind of freaked about both!!

In addition to Silverlake, check out Eagle Rock. Highland Park? Echo Park? You might need to brush up on your Spanish a bit. Heavily Latino, there. In Pasadena, especially the eastern section, it's mostly black. Try South Pasadena, Arcadia, and La Crescenta.
Start by checking out the California API scores for schools at http://www.cde.ca.gov/ta/ac/ap/. That will help you decide where to live. You'll find that Eagle Rock Elementary compares very favorably.

If I were you I would consult a famliy law attorney.. I consulted one even when I moved out of the county still in Pa. I had a consenting father though.. Just be safe when doing it the father may "grow" up and decide to finally take on some responsibilty.. Although sometimes the father realizes how dumb they were no seeing a child when they are right under their noses.. and when you move its tottally different.

instead of la itself u should look into la county. more in the valley, like la verne, glendora, san dimas, clairmont. around those areas u can expect good schools and safe environments. there are no gangs and its much more safer for living. i love it here and plus its like an hour away from la depending on the traffic.

Well, you didn't include any racial information and unfortunately it matters in LA
