I don't know about the best hotel, but I stayed at the Mondrian Hotel this summer and love it. Great Latin-themed restaurant and bar.

While the Bonaventure is a sleek, beautiful hotel, it's ghosttown-at-night downtown location makes it a stop mostly for Japanese business travelers. Of course, the best isn't cheap, and L'Ermitage,Hotel Bel-Air, Regent Bev Wilshire, are just a few of the world class hotels located in (almost always) the west side of L.A.
My personal pick for best: Ritz Carlton Huntington in Pasadena. Just being there makes you feel like royalty.

The Standard Hotel (downtown) and The W (westwood)
