Ventura is about 20 minutes south on the 101 from Santa Barbara. Ventura has a mission and a seaport area and is also the launch point for boats to the Channel Islands National Park.

North of Santa Barbara is Lompoc, home of the La Purisima mission, now a California State Park and a fully restored mission.

Solvang is also north of Santa Barbara. Solvang celebrates its Danish heritage with Danish architecture, food and crafts. Be sure to stop at Pea Soup Andersons for their world-famous pea soup.

Solvang is the gateway to the Santa Ynez Valley, one of California's wine growing centers. Many of the wineries offer wine tasting so bring a designated driver.

Heading east from Santa Barbara leads into the California Coast Mountain Range and Los Padres National Forest.
