foreign passports and liquor?

So I was wondering which stores don't accept foreign passports as a valid ID . I know target doesn't but I really don't know about other stores. Specifically trader Joes since is the one closer to my house.
Restaurants and nightclubs seem to be ok with passports but apparently it's a different story with stores.

Stores such as Target and other retail businesses should accept a foreign passport as ID. Ask to speak to the manager if they refuse, and ask him/her for an explanation.



However I have heard that a foreign passport is no an acceptable form of ID for buying alcohol. I've also heard of clubs refusing to accept foreign passports.



There could be a problem if a passport is expired or was issued by a government no longer in existence. For instance, Burma or East Germany.
